Also, the holodecks can use replicator tech to generate food/drinks, so why not a snowball? Doesn’t explain how the gangsters were able to briefly step out before dissipating. Unless of course… they never left even before they made the advanced Moriarty!
It’s regularly said that the holodeck uses multiple overlapping systems to achieve its illusion — one of those is a replicator system.
