We already have that, the first problem is we have like a dozen of them, a few are even well supported. The second problem is that usually the technical knowledge required to set up the systems are still lower than the technical knowledge required to keep it running.
Fucking podman… Oh man. I have lost way too many hours dealing with podman.
It’s frustrating, because they’ve put so much into it. It’s close enough that vendors think they can get away with saying their containers are compatible and they’ve probably really honestly tested for brief periods and it really usually is close enough that you don’t discover the differences until you’re already very well established, but then it’s just a little different and it takes you FOREVER to find out why but then the only option once you do find that out is to completely start over from scratch with docker. And, almost no vendor is going to treat them differently because if we talk to redhat, the first note we’ll get back is that everything we’re trying to do should be fully compatible and there should be no need to worry about that. And, then eventually after a few weeks, it’s docker’s fault that IT WORKS IN DOCKER AND NOT IN PODMAN. Docker needs to go fix it so it’s broken for them too, it’s not a bug for podman, the problem is with the one that’s working.
I’m a bit traumatized, not always the same, but this isn’t a singular occurrence.
I’ll thank them when they stop remaking perfectly fine utilities over minor issues then doing a shitty job with compatibility.

Sounds like you’re talking about a bltouch or a clone, they were in the market super early, I think they were one of the first.
There are more options out there now, but most do work on the same concept.
It’s almost definitely a pain in the ass, but you can probably add self leveling to your existing printer.
I know this won’t work for everyone, but I just quit playing games that don’t work or even from publishers that do shitty things and there’s still plenty of games out there. There’s a lot of shovelware out there, but there’s also a lot of good stuff out there.

However, Queer as Folk and This Life both started well after DS9 and I did explicitly specify before Deep Space Nine. You’re coming up on the time when we started to get over ourselves and things started to get better. The AIDs epidemic wasn’t exactly… good… but people were starting to make an effort to understand it more and were at least less terrified.
Aight, give me an openly gay man on TV before deep space nine that had a role where they had even half as many appearances as Bashir or Garak because I didn’t see one there.
I checked, Roy’s son was apparently in 2 episodes, the answer is there aren’t any who come close. We’ve made truly gigantic strides in LGBT representation, it was a dark time.
No disagreements on Rick Berman being a bigot, he was pretty shitty for a lot of other additional reasons too, don’t have to limit to being a homophobe, but… LGBT themes doesn’t mean openly LGBT characters. We did definitely have some, but a lot of those characters lived in the realm of plausible deniability to let them have mass appeal. Publicly, they could just be ‘two roommates’. If you were a rare character who got to be openly gay, you tended to fall victim to the ‘bury your gays’ trope and probably were not long for this world.
Ellen came out in 97, on her show and then in real life, and they responded by slapping a parental advisory warning on her very family friendly show and then cancelling it as soon as they could. It may have made Will & Grace more acceptable though in 98… I feel like that was one of the first shows where they were okay having gay men regularly on US TV, but even then only as long as it was for comedy.
I know we like to put that black and white filter on it and pretend it was a long time ago, but it was a rough time, and a lot more recent than any of us like. Gay sex was technically illegal in over a dozen states until 2003 and a few of the less progressive states hadn’t even had those laws that long. A full 28 states went out of their way to explicitly ban gay marriage, most of them did so in the early 2000s. DS9 had it’s last episode in 1999.
Fuck Rick Berman for a lot of reasons, but I think some people who weren’t alive then don’t realize how deeply unpopular homosexuality was around that time. Still room to grow, but the fact even that homophobia just isn’t the accepted norm now… It’s amazing how much progress we’ve made in my lifetime. Sad and still a coward, but back then Rick was probably 100% correct.

May not be worth it, how old are these? My knowledge is maybe out of date, but if it’s a dvd-rw opposed to a generic dvd-r, the usable lifespan used to be pretty limited. In theory, manufacturers claim 10-25 years based on their accelerated testing methods, but in actual lifespan, some data hoarders were seeing numbers average as low as 2 years for large collections. No good studies out there I’m aware of though. I used to have all of my media on dvd-rs and almost all of mine were showing read errors after 5 years, even the ones from the good manufacturer, this was back in… 2010ish.

Like a lot of the problems from the past, you basically figured it out yourself or just went off to die in a corner alone and didn’t talk about it.

It sounds like you’re getting into the keeping it running phase.
First, going back to your previous comment, self-hosting email is difficult. It’s not hard for a small provider to end up blacklisted and you’re probably kind of just done at that point and it will feel very unfair. I get that it’s a fun set of technical challenges, but you couldn’t pay me enough to help someone self-host email.
Second, guessing, but it sounds like you may be trying to expose your services directly and doing a lot to make that work which goes against what most would recommend for hosting your own services. Big companies don’t expose their intranet like that, follow their example. Almost every guide or system is going to warn against that. If you’re going to host more than one thing, highly recommend focusing on minimizing entry points and looking into a VPN-like solution for accessing most if not all of your services. Still spend time on securing your intranet, but most of your risk is going to come from how hard it is for people to get past the front door (or doors).
