This is how all businesses work. “Would you like to supersize that?” “Would you like the large for $1 more?”
My first thought was how Best Buy tries to get people who are buying a tv or DVD player to get some over priced Monster HDMI cable.
This is nothing new for retail.
As always, the headline is misleading clickbait.
The article itself says that a charger (which was already gone last year) is no longer included and staff should show customers where to find them. They should also let them know that “USB-C means the new devices cannot be charged with existing Lightning chargers”.
Nothing newsworthy if you ask me.
I don’t buy it. I worked at an Apple Retail store for five years. The company never discloses announcements to retail employees beforehand. I also worked in Apple Corp. The company never discloses announcements to corp employees who haven’t signed an NDA beforehand.
Maybe there’re store managers who read the tea leaves and gave this recommendation. There’s no way it’s a company directive. I fucking guarantee it.
the switch to USB-C means the new devices cannot be charged with existing Lightning chargers that they may already own.
Ok, makes sense. Although it was dumb of me I wondered if the phone would come with both ports.
Apple staff will be trained to caution that while a USB-C to USB-C cable is included in the box, a USB-C charger is not
Ugh really? Come on Apple, you’re switching to a new port. Just put the charger in with this one generation at least.
iPhones have been including USB-C to Lightning cables for a few generations now, though, so most people already have the blocks
Even if this is true, most people who sell their old Phone include the charging brick. Also there is a Video on Youtube that describes the problem with not including a charging brick, and the conclusion is that it created more waste and CO2 then it would if they include one with the device.
Also for most Android phones you will need a new one because you will want to use the New fast charging that comes with your new device. I don’t know if Apple Providers something similar.
As a person who works ewaste, which includes apple devices, youd be suprised on how little people return the chargers for their devices
iPhones have supported some form of fast charging since at least the iPhone 6. The included charger was usually 5W and I think they can currently take 20W fast charging
They’re only switching to a new port on the iPhone. They e been using usb-c on the brick for years.
Also, the charger wasn’t included in last years iPhones already. So that part isn’t new.
Most phones don’t provide a power block anymore though, do they? I realize this is a new switch to a new type of charge cable, but that seems like the scam of the day that everyone is running.
Thankfully, you can get them for next to nothing if you don’t mind waiting for them to be delivered.
And they already upsell power blocks hard. This is not new with USB-C.
Though, I laughed when my wife bought a new iPhone a few months ago and I discovered that the charger block they’re selling is a USB-C block. They fought tooth and nail to keep it out of their phones, claiming it wasn’t good enough, but slapped it on the other end of the lightning cable just fine.
Not surprised, I had the cell phone provider associate Ring up a 30$ usb-c block to my new phone that I didn’t ask for. Didn’t notice til I got home and read the receipt. Ppl are getting gutsy these days
