Also, I remember when Android came out and needed to find its place among all of the custom operating systems. Making it open source so that everyone (including other manufacturers) could make it their own was a huge selling point.

Are you using the free or paid version? Last time I looked at it, I couldn’t see why it was worth the cost.

You can try reaching out to the instance admin to ask if you can be a mod for that community.

You can troubleshoot this through the process of elimination.

1. Don’t make any calls from home for a day or two. That’ll tell you if it’s something localized to your home/location or if it’s specific to your phone/contract.
2. Disable all extra technology like Bluetooth. That’ll tell you if it’s a Bluetooth or other connection. Ideally, turn off all extra connections beyond cellular. You could also try voice/video calls vs. phone data - I doubt this would matter, but it’s always the last thing that you check.
3. Break your house into a few different zones. If they comment on a conversation held it in one part of the home but not another, that’ll give you an idea if it’s location specific.

You’re paying for reliability, continuity, possibly a domain name which may give a sense of exclusivity. By joining a “free” server, you don’t actually have a contract or terms of service.

I went with Lemmy because:

• Rust is the faster and more modern language.
• Lemmy had more instances when I joined - I was concerned about spreading the load over multiple instances
• It was much easier to set up and maintain a new instance via an Ansible script
• The structure, look and feel and language felt more comfortable

At this point, I’d also include how much more mature the Lemmy codebase is, for example that the api is fully accessible.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with Kbin. You choose whatever works for you and we can all enjoy the Fediverse together.
