Both are terrible and both are the aggressors or defending themselves depending on the time frame.
Isreal has the upper hand and is actively committing atrocities in response to an atrocity. Phrasing the current actions by Isreal that is causing a lot of collateral damage to civilians as defending themselves gives them a free pass to do whatever they want, and what a lot of Isreali leadership wants is to kill or drive out Palestians and take their land.
