I think I understand the rank one and rank two systems, but I’m not clear about what the 3rd represents on a Cartesian plane.

My mental model involves tying concepts to CAD design and assemblies. I am coming from FreeCAD where picking origins and designing everything on planes is critical.

The thing that I really don’t understand about tensors yet is how the origins are derived and relate with different objects in 3d space. I want to assume R3 relates to the origin but I am not sure.

A well known example is the vector cross product, which is normal to the plane of the to vectors being multiplied. Does that make enough sense?

Are you guys fucking with me?

I can’t decide if this is an extremely specialized question in a general question space, or an invitation to write nonsense just to confuse random passersby like myself.

Or perhaps, maybe both? Either way. Great job and keep up the good work!

I don’t think Lemmy is big enough for fine grain technical communities in practice. I’m all for growing them but I don’t think they are super useful in practice yet. Asking hard questions has yielded no results on several occasions. When I do get a reply from a niche community, it is usually quite a bit later. In an instance like this one, I’m looking for someone that can either point me towards a better reference source or quickly notice where I am incorrectly making assumptions. Generally I’ve gotten better results putting questions in front of more eyes at any given point in time. I have a few accounts where I have tried probing here and beehaw for expertise in whatever I am currently exploring.

I didn’t understand your explanation, but it did help me to read further and realize the direction I was trying to go with intuitively was wrong. Thanks.

Lemmy.ml has a math community with some clueful posters too. I can understand wanting to avoid stack exchange and Reddit. Wikipedia’s math reference desk is still ok though, albeit less active than it used to be.

Already discovered. That’s when I knew I had no chance of grasping this as an intuitive concept.
