I just listened to this episode of Casefile. The whole story is mortifying. Is the movie any good?

This is good to look into. I’ve tried remote streaming on several different devices. Before I bought the NAS I was sure it could handle a few streams, but maybe I was wrong.

I’m sorry, I’m not knowledgeable enough to answer this. Should my router be bound to a certain IP? I believe it has an assigned local IP, but does it also have a public one?

Remote access is enabled but whether I’m actually able to access the server or library remotely is intermittent. Plex says I may be double-natted but I was pretty sure I’m not. I’ll have to investigate again.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I pay for a static IP through my VPN provider, and I’ve wondered if there would be a benefit to running my server through the static IP, then using the same IP to access the server remotely. (Not sure if I’m describing that correctly.)

Unfortunately I’m using Nest WiFi and it doesn’t have QoS settings. You’re making me consider buying a new mesh router system because Nest also doesn’t have manual band selection, which I need for some IoT devices.

Ah, Plex suggested I might be double-natted. Since fiber doesn’t need a modem (from my understanding) I have: fiber cable to box, box Ethernet to router, router ethernet to NAS. Maybe it would be better if I did box directly to NAS? Or would that put it on a separate network? I’ll look into your double-nat solution. Thank you.

I tested between 800-900Mbps UP, closer to a full gig down.

I’m not an expert but I have spent several years organizing in my field. Legally it only takes 2 workers to form a bargaining unit. It’s normal to see a union as unnecessary when you’re satisfied with your working conditions. Unfortunately without a union there’s nothing protecting those benefits you enjoy, and they’re often the first thing employers target when they’re looking to cut costs. Without a union your employer has no obligation to consult with you before, for example, switching to a cheaper health insurance or freezing bonuses.

A union contract lets you decide which issues you want to weigh in on. Don’t mind working holidays? Leave it out of the contract. Want regular raises? Put it in the contract.

Contrary to popular belief, you won’t pay any dues until you have a contract that you feel is worth what you’re paying. Sometimes people say, “I paid dues but the union never did anything for me.” Nearly every time I’ve heard this the person A. worked in a union that’s been around for a long time, and negotiated major improvements before they started the job, and/or B. did not actively participate by attending meetings or voting on contracts. It’s like saying, “I didn’t vote in my local elections, and the city council never did anything for me.”

Of course there’s incompetence and corruption, just like in government, but I rarely hear people argue that the solution to government corruption is to stop having elections. Unions are literally the only reliable way for workers to improve their working conditions.

I can understand your point given the state of things, but I think the point always deserves a caveat, which is that the parasitism and destruction isn’t equally distributed. The majority of people on earth consume at a relatively sustainable rate, and there’s no reason they deserve to be wiped out. Unfortunately they’re increasingly forced to rely on the destructive minority for their basic needs.

I’m usually not drawn to comedies, but Palm Springs is what came to mind for me. I learned what it means for a screenplay to be “tight” - efficient, cohesive. Every line fits the tone of the movie and moves the plot forward. Plus it’s technically such a beautiful movie. The lighting is warm, the soundtrack is fun, and the chemistry between all the actors is perfect.
