Simple question but can be a complex answer. Basically it depends where your phone gets DNS from: if it’s using the ISP DNS (or some other public DNS server) it will resolve the public internet IP of your server and the data will route out to the ISP WAN before being routed back in.

On the other hand you can configure a split DNS system, so say you are using your modem/gateway as your DNS server and it forwards DNS queries up to your ISP (or other) DNS server - a common setup, 1. you can add in a static host entry for your local server. Eg ‘yourservice.yourserverdomain.com = 192.168.1.20 (your server’s LAN IP)’

Now when your phone is on the WiFi and it looks up your server’s address it gets the local IP and routes locally, which will be faster.

Nah man. Windows 10 was full of telemetry from day 1. It was the first version of Windows that hid away the ability to even use a local-only login, trying to push every user onto a MS account for that sweet tracking and advertising dollar.

The problem I have with this I put the PC to sleep overnight every night - and like clockwork, Windows wakes it back up sometime overnight to do… Something.

I’ve been diagnosing the issue for years - checking wake timers, switching hardware devices permissions to wake the system off. I might fix it for a few months and then a new Windows update comes along and it’s back to its usual routine of waking itself.

Looking forward to seeing if it persists with Linux when I move at the end of support period for Win10 later this year.

I mean, not long ago on a evolutionary timescale we were hunter-gatherers, living only in small familial groups. People have changed a lot and we’ll continue to, there’s no reason to believe our current flaws are inescapable. That’s just defeatism and apathy

I gave each of the first 2 mods I contacted 24hrs to response, as I was concerned over a server-wide ban for ‘PM spamming’ or something. Having not heard back, I lost patience and sent PMs to entire mod team.

That got multiple positive responses back from five of the mods, a few of which commented that they couldn’t see why that would warrant deletion or ban. The mod that remedied it said he’d unban me immediately and take it to the mod team to discuss why the comment was deleted, ‘in case there were details they weren’t aware of’ (since the modlog was so bare). An hour later the comment had been undeleted too and multiple messages from mods sending apologies for the delay and hassle - so it looks like nobody saw an issue with the comment.

It was not made clear to me if it was an automod action, and it seemed like at least some of the mods can’t de-obfuscate the modlog either, because they asked me if I remember who made the ban (I obviously do not know). I did ask the mod who got my issue fixed, I’ll edit this comment if they have futher info. But for now I’m taking the win and getting on with using Lemmy.

I guess there’s a post for every lurker where they go ‘ok i’ll finally make an account so i can make a comment’ and for me it was a large body of people calling the ProtonMail founder a Nazi because he posted praise of Trumps pick for Assistant AG for the DoJ Antitrust Division that may actually take action on the big four tech companies to break up their monopolies. This is a guy and a business that I have no connection to other than using Proton for a few years now. However, I thought it was worthwile to post his words that had been declared by the vast majority of commenters to be utterly unnacceptable to the point of people uprooting themselves from Proton and swearing off the service.

I dont feel like i posted something incredibly challenging, and it certainly broke none of the rules on that comm - so i was quite surprised at the ban and deletion as a ‘welcome to lemmy’ after lurking for a year or so.
