Their “dominance” is the choice of the distributions. Gnome is opinionated, and I respect that they follow their vision. To me this is free software working as intended, people are free to fork Gnome if they want something that the devs don’t want. And apparently, many distributions think Gnome should be the default. Maybe it shouldn’t, but that’s up to the distros to decide.

There are some old interviews with George RR Martin where people ask him about various characters, and GRRM would adjust his pronounciation to match the person asking the question. So he’s pronouncing names differently in different interviews depending on how others pronounce them. I wonder if it is to make the other person comfortable, or if he just doesn’t have a canon pronounciation.

It’s fair, but different people have different ideas about what they want, and in the end it’s the authors right to decide what is fair for their code. An unconditional gift is also fair.

People seem to think that those who choose permissive licences don’t know what they’re doing. Software can be a gift to the world with no strings attached. A company “taking” your code is never taking it away from you, you still have all the code you wrote. Some people want this. MIT is not an incomplete GPL, it has its own reasons.

For example, OpenBSD has as a project goal: “We want to make available source code that anyone can use for ANY PURPOSE, with no restrictions. We strive to make our software robust and secure, and encourage companies to use whichever pieces they want to.”

I have come to appreciate Palatino more and more over the years. Especially at display sizes.

Is the breaking change going to happen in stable mid release cycle? Or at a major version upgrade?

OpenBSD works surprisingly well as a desktop, probably because the devs use it themselves. As long as you have supported hardware that is.

Free cost and free as in freedom to understand and modify the code. I also think it’s a beautiful way of doing things. We also have Wikipedia and Openstreetmap. The internet has a tremendous potential for collaboration, people doing things because they want to, for the benefit of everyone.

If you look at the Lascaux cave paintings, there’s great potential for a soft earthy color theme imho. Black and red on off-white, similar colors as medieval vellum with black ink and vermillion red/orange.

Consider this: when you speak the listeners know what you mean based on the rest of the sentence. When you write you give the reader the intended word through spelling. People who read will see your words and assume you really meant “then” instead of “than”, and the sentence will make little sense.
The words “I” and “eye” sound similar, but if you write “eye” I will read a sentence first thinking you are trying to say something about an eye, then when it breaks down, go back and find the issue. End that my friend is less then eye-deal for comprehension.

To be fair, iirc, macOS is certified UNIX despite having the XNU kernel which stands for X is Not UNIX.

In the summer, those stacks of wooden boxes beekeepers use can contain around 60k bees. It’s a quite normal amount of bees in a bee hive. When it gets colder and the season ends it goes down to maybe 20k bees. At least that’s what a bee keeper told me once. I think we have the same terminology then, we also call them “flyttblock”. Is there a story behind them being called Devil’s rock? It sounds very finnish to me to be honest.

The ice sheet covering northern europe started to melt away, and with that we got what is called “glacial erratics”. Rocks had traveled from once place to another, and then settled. In Sweden we call those “giants throw”, because it was assumed that the only way those big rocks could be where they are was if a giant had thrown it.

If you dip the nib directly into the ink, there will be too much ink at the tip of the nib, which makes it hard to do hairlines or thin strokes. The trick is to fill the reservoir or nib further up with a small brush.
