  • I think Puppy or Damn Small Linux, maybe knoppix, i was on dial up at the time. Then I found that I could request a free Ubuntu install disk and the speed and cleanliness and compiz effects blew my mind. 04 or 06, can’t remember which. From there I think it was xubuntu, mint, arch, arch nvme died and I needed an os immediately so manjaro, got sick of manjaro and garuda sounded neat so i tried it and that’s where I am now on my main. Made a mess toying with wayland and am ready to reinstall, probably back to arch or try out nixos

edit: reading through all these comments is bringing back so many memories of other distros I played with back then.

  • Probably not well. Its drm does some weird shit where it (3dexperience) runs in the background and then launches a web page that has you log in and you launch and update from the browser. I think there’s a way to directly launch it with a shortcut but all in all it just does so much weird shit that i haven’t even tried.

I miss Autodesk Inventor but i can’t remotely justify the price for dicking around with personal projects and solidworks for makers is a pretty damn good deal. Plus SW seems like the industry standard so looks better on a resume? I’m a programmer so it doesn’t really matter but meh.

OnShape might be okay, probably runs just fine on Linux, but i hate that its cloud based. I just want to own my software goddamnit.

One day we’ll have a foss parametric non-destructive blender-level cad suite. FreeCAD and OpenSCAD are neat but not really what I’m looking for.

    I’m ranting again…

Yeah lots of unix-likes out there but it’s not running the linux kernel so it’s decidedly not linux. I was just trying to stir up shit in a shit stirring thread.

Now, to possibly stir up more shit: Its ancestry might even be closer to unix than linux itself since darwin was derived from nextstep/bsd whereas linux was a mix of minix and torvalds going “fuck this licensing shit i’ll just make my own”

I will say, any time i’ve had to deal with a macos system i’ve appreciated being able to drop into a familiar shell. DOS commands drive me insane. dir is 50% longer than ls! Who has time for that!
