It will give you an answer despite neither of these countries existing at that point in time and yet it should know when those countries were formed. You can get it to write fiction just as easily as non-fiction because it has no concept of facts, it’s all just probabilities. The only reason it’s able to tell you that the United States was founded in 1776 is because many people have repeated that fact on the internet. So there is a very strong association between the words forming the question and the answer.

And you can insist that the United States was not formed in 1776 and to try again. If you insist enough it will eventually give you a different date instead of telling you you are incorrect.

Careful about how you throw around the word “entitlement”. The top competition is free and search engines are very low value for the average person. It’s very reasonable to expect search engines to be free and for anything paid to be a niche product. Google search results may be terrible, but not so terrible that I’m going to pay $5/month to escape it.

I can’t be paying $5 or $10/month for yet another service. I understand the companies need to make money, but the amount of services asking for a subscription is getting out of hand. And $5 is really high for a search engine, that price is crazy. I was expecting something like $12/year for unlimited searches.

I don’t think AI is the problem here. It’s that I can write a book, claim George R. R. Martin is the author and Amazon won’t fact check me.

Emulation is the least amount of work for all involved. If some poor guy is to spend weeks or months of his time porting a game it better be worth the investment. Porting should only be done for games that are completely broken and can’t run in a VM or emulator.

It takes less than 30 minutes to setup a Windows or Linux VM.

If successful, he could force the companies responsible for applications such as ChatGPT or Midjourney to compensate thousands of creators. They may even have to retire their algorithms and retrain them with databases that don’t infringe on intellectual property rights.

They will readily agree to this after having made their money and use their ill gotten gains to train a new model. The rest of us will have to go pound sand as making a new model will have been made prohibitively expensive. Good intentions, but it will only help them by pulling up the ladder behind them.

The music industry wants their license fees and people want to play using those special controllers. So it’s prohibitively expensive to make this type of game on top of the added burden of the hardware. It’s a miracle the game even exists as is.

All of the discussion over copyright of AI is a complete waste of time. Given only a bit of human editing AI art is indistinguishable from art made in entirety by a person. It will be nothing but a “feel good” law that does nothing to help the artists AI has displaced. We should be focusing directly on helping artists or others maintain their livelihood.

It’s still a win if the move causes widespread adoption by the average consumer. The more privacy conscious can just use a different client.

But that’s sort of the nature of the beast when you put your content up for free on a public website. Does Kbin or Beehaw owe us money for our comments on this thread? What about everyone currently reading? At least KBin and Beehaw are making profit off of this.

The argument is not as clear cut as people are making it sound and it has potential to up-end some fundamental expectations around free websites and user-generated content. It’s going to affect far more than just AI.

I always do everything online anonymously unless there’s a VERY good reason not to. So with no identity or investment in an account to protect, I don’t really fear any negative feedback. That said, it’s not a license to be a jerk and I try not to come across as aggressive or blaming them for what is on the whole, a very minor problem in my life.

In business, a poor person doesn’t get to try, a middle class person gets one shot after putting everything on the line and a rich person can afford to fail a dozen or more times until they hit a winner. Elon has enough money that he can basically try an infinite number of times and at least some of those are going to work.

Humans need jobs in order to be able to pay for things and keep the economy running. AI is going to cause job loss on a scale we’ve never seen before. These people are not going to simply retrain into a new career and find new jobs. Those hypothetical new jobs are soon going to be automated away as well.

The economy and how we view income generation needs be rethought entirely. We’re headed towards a society where most people will not be working meaningful jobs, if they have jobs at all.

A few series exist that let you do this, but none offer agency to the other players outside of battles to go talk to NPCs and get their own quests.

I think Divinity OS2 has this. You can go off on your own and do side quests. But you’re probably going to be restricted by how tight the difficulty curve is and can’t handle major battles solo. Though I guess a mod could change that.

My main concern are games and systems that will be streaming only in the future.

I doubt that it will ever become the main way to consume games for several reasons.

1. It cuts out far too many customers with bad internet
2. It doesn’t offer any advantages over a console, which offers ease of use and a standard hardware configuration. It’s equivalent at best.
3. People are underestimating how difficult or expensive setting up and maintaining the infrastructure for streaming games is.

I get that communities for popular games can be a bit hit or miss, but communities for single player games are pretty chill. Competitive team games like the Source games you mentioned, League of Legends etc. are on a whole different level of toxic. They can’t even be compared.

For something like Genshin the real problem is content creators. Much of the so called toxicity has little to nothing to do with the game itself and is more an issue with huge cults of personality clashing with each other. I think every popular game is going to fall victim to this going forward and you just have to learn to ignore it.
