It’s quite concerning that something like 37% of the land on this planet is used for agriculture with most of it used for livestock. Biodiversity is being destroyed so we can enjoy a grilled ribeye.

So, I understand the enthusiasm for lab-grown meat. At the same time, I don’t trust big corporations and their captured government agencies to be truthful about the long-term health effects of something like lab-grown meat, and I also expect the positive environmental impact may get overstated to push for outlawing traditional livestock in favor of lab-grown meat for which a handful of big corporations will own patents. Patented seeds for plants that don’t produce viable seeds and lab-grown meat sounds like a good way for corporations to have complete control over humanity’s food supply, more so than they do already.

  • Self-driving in general has been overhyped by grifter tech bros like Elon and really shows the current limits of ML. Today, ML models are basically fuzzy, probabilistic functions that map inputs to outputs and are not capable of actual reasoning. There is a long tail of scenarios where a self-driving car will not generalize properly (i.e., will kill people). Throwing increasingly more data and compute at it won’t suddenly make it capable of reasoning like a human. Like other ML use cases, self-driving is a cool concept that can be put to good use under the right conditions, and can even operate mostly without human supervision. However, anyone claiming it’s safe to let today’s “self-driving” cars shuttle humans around at high speeds with no additional safeguards in place either has an unrealistic understanding of the tech or is a sociopath.

  • What I don’t like about ATV and the Apple ecosystem in general is the lack of ease with sideloading. Ha, I’ve created throwaway accounts with fake emails in the past and then lost access to the email account followed by the Apple device basically being bricked a result. If it’s so “private” then why not let me install free apps from the App Store without an account?
