I wish I could be this optimistic

I personally love torrents, their decentralized nature will make them last forever.

I would love to see a client that shows you a full catalog of movies and shows and downloads right from the client. If I choose a movie it will just start downloading it right there and can let me watch it in a few minutes. Basically similar to popcorn time but actually maintained, and also supports a vpn.

My family still likes to use streaming services because they choose something off of Netflix and watch. It would be nice to have the same experience with torrents.

There are projects out there with excellent practices with a good culture surrounding quality where people aren’t told to kill themselves. There are other ways to establish that culture and set high expectations.

It absolutely is. It’s not the place to learn the basics obviously, but members need to learn what is expected of them, just like on any other team/organization.

Linus’s outbursts absolutely hinder growth. He’s lucky that his project has become so important and people will work on it regardless, but he and the Linux kernel would have been better off if he was wasn’t driving people away as much as he was.

This is going to be a boring answer but I use neovim. I do use it as my ide as well but it’s so fast and lightweight that when I need to edit a random config file or something, I just start another instance of it.

I get the sentiment, but most places don't have even halfway decent coffee shops. Everyone gives starbucks shit (rightfully so), but the fact is if you walk into a random cafe in America, it will most likely be inferior to starbucks. The level of quality in American coffee is just abysmal. And if you're traveling, you won't know if the cafe you take a chance on is a hidden gem (spoiler, it never is). I was in Austin one time and I found this hipster place that had great reviews on google. The interior was really nice, nice place to work, spacious, etc. The coffee tasted like dog water. It wasn't mediocre, it was trash. I'm sure Austin has great cafes, but unless you live there how will you know? Starbucks is a consistent mediocre coffee.

That was my thought too. I’m guessing you’re American. Rural Americans are especially bigoted for some reason. I’ve been to rural areas in other countries and they’re not this bad. People openly stare at you in rural America if you’re not white.

What is why? What is the solution we’re trying to solve?

Lemmy being imperfect doesn’t change the fact that it does solve one big problem: it takes the big corporation and its influences out of the equation. It is not possible for a centralized solution to do this.

I thought they were super convenient until I had to repair my phone and apple deleted my old sims because they thought there was a physical sim (there’s wasn’t). So I have to go to the agency for the sims I lost. One of them is in another country. So I won’t be able to get that until I go there again.
