In regards to SSX, after the success of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater remake, I am surprised that EA did not counter with a remake of SSX Tricky. I love how accessible the SSX controls are while still offering plenty of depth for people who want to optimize their runs. It is too bad that EA Sports seems to be focused on simulationist sports games (and live services).

I thought that the uproar about horse armor was that it was the first pay-to-win DLC. The armor was not just cosmetic but actually provided a stat boost to your horse. The accusation was that the developers had made it too easy for enemies to kill your horse and decided to patch the game to fix it but made players pay for the patch.

Note with Stardew Valley: it is not unplayable without a controller, but if you have clumsy sausage fingers like me, the poor touch controls really took me out of the game.

Making unique systems is part of Nintendo’s identity. Xbox and PlayStation compete on maximizing specs and slowly evolving features (though even they throw in one or two gimmicks per generation). Nintendo competes on creating new experiences that draw in people outside of core gamers. The Wii was about using motion controls to draw in people who don’t want to waggle a joystick. The WiiU was about asymmetrical user experience. The Switch (like the GameCube) is about bringing the games to social situations (the opposite of other systems emphasis on online gaming).

Overall, as someone who is not a hardcore gamer, I love the Nintendo philosophy. It encourages developers to experiment with the hardware and create novel interactive experiences.

I am not saying that you are wrong for wanting a more powerful system, but I would be disappointed with a Nintendo system that does not have a big gimmick.

This could mean that there is a new game coming (I hope), but it most likely (also) means that they are gearing up to port all of the Ace Attorney games to a new system. I love the series, but they really squeeze every cent out of it.

Hopefully they will port the game engine and then feel confident enough to release a new game.

Cynical reading “These fans have not played all of the previous games and don’t have the older systems, so we need to get the games on the new systems that they own.”

Technically yes, the Switch was announced less than half a year before release, but Nintendo had been talking about it for much longer. In March 2015, that DeNA was helping them develop online play for an upcoming console codenamed the Nintendo NX. In April 2016, they announced the planned release month for the NX: March 2017. They made a soft announcement for the console two years before release and announced a planned release date almost a year before. Granted, during the Wii U era, Nintendo was probably more open with plans than they would have liked to be to keep up investor confidence.

Nintendo has yet to talk about their plans for their next console. All we have heard is rumors that a Nintendo employee was shown off a prototype in a convention hotel room and that certain major developers have new dev kit.

I assume that it is too late to launch this summer. Systems are almost always announced at least 1 year in advance while Nintendo has yet to confirm that they have a design done for their next system.

That is a very bold assertion.

I just assume that the Nintendo first party games tend to sell well and sell for a long time, so when they stop getting manufactured, they all sell out and still have a bit of demand left that scoops up used copies. They are not making Madden or Call of Duty, which sell well for a year and then everyone is looking to sell last year’s version.

They have a perfectly good explanation in the first paragraph of the article:

It would be nice to have Nintendo farm out some of its IP to third party devs. It will mean more games in the major (and especially secondary) series. It will be nice to see a new developers versions of iconic series.

The only risk is that other studios are not going to meet Nintendo’s level of quality, hurting the brand, but past history suggests that that will not occur.

I do hope that third party studios are not just getting a license but also access to design docs, so they can match the feel of other games. For example, Mario platformers have very good physics that many indie games cannot match. It would be great if anyone else making a Mario game can match that same feel.

The Switch seems to still be selling fairly well, so there is not yet urgency to move on to the next console. Having said that, I imagine it will take a while to roll out that console, even if they are already manufacturing them in bulk (though if that was the case, I would have expected to see some more leaks).

It is a common term. I am not sure why it is used. Possibly because the consoles were not sold to end users but shipped to retailers. Some (small portion) is sitting on store shelves.

I tried it for an hour and it seems like a super chill MMO. There were definitely issues. The camera gets caught on large objects when you try to place them and camera shake needs a bit of tuning. Playing in portable mode, there was some object pop-in, cinematics looked rough, and it was hard to differentiate the icons for left and right stick in tutorials.

More importantly, starting out, the game did not look bad. There is a very pleasant core loop of farming, gathering, and hunting. There were no live service login rewards. The real money store seems to only have cosmetic items.

Will that be confusing? Nintendo released the Game Boy Micro (only plays Game Boy Advance cartridges) after the DS (DS and GBA cartridges). I don’t think too many people were confused.

To avoid confusion, Nintendo should name their next system something other than Switch 2, Switch Next, or something else with Switch in the name. Then again, I cannot understand the Xbox naming convention is a bit nonsense but no one is out rioting in the streets.

IT is definitely a job that has to know how to pick up heavy objects. I have a friend who was working as a consultant configuring corporate telephony systems. One time, he showed up to an install that was running a bit behind schedule. He stepped in to help finish the server room set up and ended up permanently damaging his back.

How is Ashneer Grover a “former co-founder”? Is he such a fraudster that he rewrote the past and stopped himself from founding the company?

Am I the only one who finds the low frame rate mouth flaps a bit revolting, like it is triggering the uncanny valley?

It is kind of hard to check hardware prototypes into version control.

I assume that first party game developers are sometimes working with unannounced hardware that Nintendo might not want leaving the office. It also makes it easier to call a hardware engineer over when you break the system.
