This is incredibly common in SF. Many people live in co-ops and it’s created an entire subculture where they coordinate large parties and events both within the co-op and with other co-ops. It’s gone beyond necessity and become preferred by some because they enjoy living with lots of others. Not my thing, but many friends live in co-ops and love it.

Even in the past I’ve had nowhere near as many non-GPU related issues. Some GUI elements in Gnome just did not work, and at one point I was getting low USB power errors even though the USB drive and port were known good. The amount of workarounds I had to attempt to implement before settling on Debian was insane.

I actually had my most difficult time ever setting up Linux on my 5800X3D and 3070 recently.

PopOS wouldn’t save my resolution on reboot, and then after fixing it all of my games were running at the wrong resolution or breaking in various frustrating ways. All Linux native games too. Jumped to Fedora and every single game flickered like mad and then once I got that fixed my package manager inexplicably broke. I was about to install Ubuntu before saying fuck any chance of instability and going to Debian.

I had to manually install way more than any of the other distros, but everything just worked once I got my graphics driver installed. I was really disappointed given I’ve been using Linux on and off for 8 years, and my Steam Deck has been nothing but solid. I’m honestly just disappointed things have trended in a bad direction, and I hope this was just a one off experience and not the norm now.

AFAIK, and I could be wrong, the one for SF is not just purchasing credits, but electricity from local power suppliers. I believe the way it works here is a certain percentage of electricity is supplied by the renewable energy partners and PG&E is responsible for the remaining percentage. This percentage is based on the number of people who have elected to go the green power route. Obviously they can’t do this on the fly due to how power generation and grids work, but on a month long scale they have more than enough time to modulate generation sources to get close enough.

So let’s say 60% of people are signed up for the program. They’ll get roughly 60% of the city’s power from the renewable sources they have, and allow PG&E to generate the rest. Sure the transmission of power to my place isn’t going to be 100% renewable, but that doesn’t matter as someone who is on the non-renewable plan somewhere will receive the renewable generated power anyway, so the net effect is the same, and I still get cheaper electricity generation charges.

My city (San Francisco) has a program where you can elect to get 100% of your power from renewables which are primarily hydro, solar, and wind and it comes out cheaper every month than buying power from PG&E. It’s pretty great.

The 1.6 update completed the game extremely well. A lot of the quality of life stuff feels incredibly natural, and I’m loving the new farm so far. Especially since it’s forcing me to >!focus on animals instead of Uber optimizing crops!<.

Even then buying and selling stocks, having a 401k, IRA, etc. doesn’t even make it complicated. You just have to fill out a 1099-B/DIV/INT and then list your contributions to your retirement accounts.

I don’t know why people pretend it’s so hard. You spend 30 minutes every year answering a few questions and punching numbers into boxes from a few documents that are sent to you by your broker/bank/employer. It’s also only $15 at FreeTaxUSA.

Opening the accounts you report to the IRS is arguably more difficult than filing them on your taxes.

I’ve noticed this too both in those around me and myself (mid 20s). If you have the technical knowledge (or ability to follow instructions) you can setup your torrents behind a VPN using qBittorrent and gluetun in one docker container, and Plex/Jellyfin in another with a shared volume between them. It provides you near bullet proof protection due to the isolated environment and prevents accidentally clicking those .mp4.exes since it abstracts file management away from you. It’s also super user friendly once set up even if you’re not running a media server 24/7 and just want it for your desktop.

If you wanna get fancy you can use the *arr suite of software to do some magic fairy shit including automatic indexing (searching dozens of torrent sites simultaneously), but that can quickly become a deep rabbit hole. Once setup though it’s seamless and kicks ass.

Every method I’ve encountered in the past was thwarted by a good ole VPN. This was all on unlocked or rooted phones though so YMMV work carrier phones.

I’m a Zoomer with a Dell Optiplex running Ubuntu server, an 18 TB HDD, and 35 years of combined seed time. I’ll let you fill in the gaps. Many of us are extremely tech literate and often share our Plex/Jellyfin instances with friends. Many of these not-so-etch-literate friends ask how they can do this for themselves using their computers and we shoot them over instructions.

Piracy is infinitely easier/more accessible than ever. It’s spreading like wildfire and thanks to the FOSS community anyone with a spare evening can get themselves up and running very quickly.

Stardew Valley?

Not OP, but I just use ZeroTier for this since it’s dead simple to setup and free. I’m sure there’s some 100% self-hosted solutions, but it’s worked for me without issue.

I’d say it’s more convenience than elitism.

I’m in BTN and it’s the only indexer I use for my Sonarr instance because it has absolutely everything. I’ve never not been able to find something and almost everything I download will saturate my 1.2 Gbps connection.

For Radarr I don’t have any private trackers and it takes 35 public trackers to get coverage that is almost as good. The options I’m given are way less organized and download speeds are a gamble. It’s not really an issue because I rarely watch movies, but I definitely understand why private trackers are so sought after. I’ll eventually try to get into some smaller ones which tend to be pretty easy to do.

Auto save with Google Docs style snapshots has so little overhead I’d hardly consider it a trade-off. We have insane amounts of disk storage and extremely reliable non-volatile memory. The only reason against it that I can conceive of is confidential data you don’t ever want to exist outside of volatile memory.

All modern word processors use auto save and it kinda blows my mind libre does not do this.

Please never bring up CNF again. I’m a year out of college, two years out of finite automata, and I still shudder when it’s brought up.

Do yourself a favor and rent a floor sander for like $80 bucks a day and save your orbital sander for the edges next time. That or duct tape the orbital sander to a stick.
