They are pointless, just ignore them.

Only the case for subscribers. Upvotes/downvotes are shown from all instances that YOUR instance is linked with.
Same it true the other way. Federation only only works with text and images are pulled from the original instances and there seems to be an issue with that.
1·1 year agoI don’t know the specifcs, but there are strict rules and requirements on how the data has to be stored if you process any of it, then there is complience issues with laws like GDPR and you have to be a registered entity as far as I know. It’s just too much legal paperwork for most FOSS projects.

You are unlikely to find FOSS alternative that is not for cryptocurrencies as the regulations around credit card data processing makes it hard.
I don’t think their are removing phone requirement, they will just add username support on top of it, so you can invite people using username, but still need phone to register an account.

It requires 71 permissions, which is pretty much full access to your device.
@[email protected] Did some testing and it seems that it doesn’t load images through RSS but if you select load webpage, it will show the image.
Signal is great for one on one conversations or small groups. Matrix is better served for communities as federation offers censorship resitance, but they collect some metadata that Signal doesn’t. They do have encrypted DMs, but it’s less user friendly than Signal and if your partner is not tech savvy, I would go with Signal.
Signal has 2 points of concern:
- Phone number requirement
- Centralized server (one point of failure)
I use both for different groups of people. E.g. My Matrix account is publically listed on my Lemmy account, but my Signal one is only given to people I trust to some level.
