Just like you can think about sex, music, food, etc. Just don’t stand there thinking “What am I supposed to be thinking about with this one?” If an artist’s message is so small it can be put into words, they should just tack a notecard to the wall.
Art might not be about thinking while you are experiencing it, but it most definitely is about thinking about the experience afterwards, as much as experiencing it in the first place.
Not to mention that books are often art.
Sure yeah, thinking afterward is great. Just like you can think about sex, music, food, etc.
