How much do you want to bet that US evangelicals were pushing this?
this is basically a given. proselytization and evangelical pressure is responsible for the vast majority of bills like this in Africa. they’re not exactly natural expressions of where people are at and most of them would not happen without overt support from evangelical groups.[1]
(although that’s not to say these countries wouldn’t be full of homophobes in their absence—colonialism was the original sin of homophobia for many of them rather than evangelicals) ↩︎
