This has been a major feature that was missing for awhile. The internet isn’t always accessible and it’s crucial for the primary navigation device to be able to work without it.

I seem to recall hearing that if you ask for directions to an area with poor cellular coverage, you will get a prompt asking you if you would like to download the map.

Haven’t tested it myself, but nice touch if true.

Or use an alternative like OsmAnd Maps or Magic Earth that have great CarPlay support, use open and detailed maps, and allow you to offline the entire planet should you need to.

Very much so, I used it when travelling along the west coast of the US a week ago and the only issue I see is that it constantly announces the destination anew when it switches to offline maps and back. As we were leaving SF there was a couple of areas without signal and it just announced the destination like 6 times in 3 minutes. But that’s minor

I had this same experience with it re-announcing directions too which got a little annoying. If you set it to only use offline maps, you won’t see this behavior but searching for destinations is sometimes finicky since it will only look in the offline database and even then may not find everything. I submitted feedback for changing the re-annoucing to a chime since the visual is there on CarPlay anyways. If you haven’t submitted feedback for this, feel free to submit one and reference feedback ID FB13139836 to maybe get more visibility on this.

Even works in Japan for downloads which is surprising because Google won’t work there.
