Mainly because if your ears get hot any sweat can cause the earbuds to fall out. They at least don’t fall on the floor (just into the headphone can) but it’s not as nice as having regular wireless headphones.

Pro-tip: if you plan to use them for more that about 3 hours at a time, get a second pair of earbuds. That way when the first one’s battery dies you can just swap them out while it recharges

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money and are willing to put up with jank you can do what I do: get a pair of hearing protection headphones from the hardware store.

Just regular noise isolating cans for like mowing lawns or shooting guns. You can find a decent pair for less than $35. Look for a high NRR value (Noise Reduction Rating).

Then just wear earbuds underneath them. I use Samsung Galaxy Buds, but any wireless earbuds will do.

When I got LASIK I wasn’t allowed to wear contacts for a few weeks before the surgery. I bought the cheapest pair of glasses from Zenni. I had new glasses for $17 + $10 shipping.

If I had to do it again I would have my IPD measured by a proper optometrist first. I just guessed at it and got ones a little too small, so they had a kind of fisheye effect.

Still, for <$30 it was a great bargain

I did back in college. Mobile computing was just becoming a thing but I was way too hipster (and poor) for a PDA or one of those newfangled “smart phone” devices.

I hacked together a wifi SMS texting gadget following a tutorial on Hack a Day. It ran Debian with Linux kernel 2.6 and was so fun to tinker with.

It had 32 MB of RAM but X used 11 MB of that so you couldn’t really do anything in graphical mode anyway. A shell running GNU screen however only took 4 MB so it was much more usable from the terminal.

I eventually figured out a way to pipe images and even (non accelerated, since it didn’t have a GPU) video from mplayer to write directly into the framebuffer. It was a real bear to get it translated into landscape mode.

I Am Legend in 144p never looked so good.

Even with the terrible specs, I have never loved a phone so much as I loved that little computer
