Love this channel, I’ve watched his videos for a couple years now. His scientific method can leave a lot to be desired at times, but it’s still great information and I always keep them in mind.

The first two reasons, to me, feel like excuses to hide the true reason(s) they cheat. I’d wager it varies per person but that many just want to be seen as cool or skilled by having everything or beating everyone. It seems equivalent to people who modify cars to be extremely loud; despite many saying the contrary, they’ve convinced themselves that people love to hear their loud cars go by.

It could also be the anonymous effect of online games. They don’t quite perceive themselves as cheating, really, because they don’t know the players and will never know them. It likely feels like NPCs in a video game, for the most part. If there were actually social pressure, like would be in a schoolyard game of football, then far fewer would be willing to risk the social ostracization. But because they are anonymous online, they feel safe and empowered to cheat.

The streamer Atrioc recently made a comment about old videos like this that really makes me think every time I see a throwback like this.

He pointed out how our media consumption has completely changed, and that for many of the most viral videos 10 years ago, people wouldn’t even make it halfway through them if they were posted today.

“Charlie bit my finger” was so popular but if it had been released today would be absolutely ignored. The actual bite doesn’t happen for 20 seconds which is longer than most short form content

I just wish people were less aggressive when arguing on the internet. It just gets so vitriolic and about winning rather than finding the truth

I also hate when people think “downvote = disagree” when that’s really not what we should be using it for. I never down vote in a debate (unless they get rude or offensive) and I always feel bad when someone comes along and down votes the person I’m arguing with! Now they’re going to think it’s me doing it and get angry!

The paper doesn’t use psuedocode as I know it. In my experience pseudocode looks much more similar to real code. (According to Wikipedia I’m more used to mathematical pseudocode)

I’ve never been a fan because writing some simplified Python seems better. Or even better, writing Python that doesn’t necessarily follow every syntax rule to a T and takes liberties where necessary to improve readability

While data privacy is a concern, in my opinion the real fear motivating the government is the massive control China has, indirectly, through TikTok, over citizens’ beliefs and culture.

As another comment pointed out, Facebook (and Cambridge Analytica) had an enormous role in Donald Trump getting elected. That is the kind of influence and power that shouldn’t be in the hands of a foreign power (ironically, it’s the kind of power the US has wielded for generations over many countries). And the US especially doesn’t want China or Russia to have that power.

If China felt inclined, they very likely could push to have the algorithm modified to fit a particular agenda - say perhaps promoting a pro-China candidate - and most users would barely notice and slowly be drip fed posts that nudge them in a particular direction. People in power could start to lose that power at the behest of TikTok.

As many will likely point out, there’s a good arm’s distance between China and TikTok right now, as far as we know, but it’s possible they are more involved than they let on (much like the NSA and Facebook) and could become more involved over time. It’s a risk the government is unwilling to take.

A good example of what kinds of things can happen is when TikTok published a post to every US user with their congressperson’s number, urging them to call them to protest the ban. I’m certain that scared the shit out of the US government and probably did more to force the ban down mid than anything else.

I’ve always found his videos so charming but I really wish they were longer and told a more engaging story. Like his Subway tales

The US has a lot of bullshit in their labeling requirements. My wife studied food science in university and some of her biggest complaints are:

• Serving sizes aren’t always the entire package*
• “Natural” has almost no meaning on a package, it is just a hand-waving word
• They can hide a lot of things in the ingredients under umbrella terms like “spices” and “flavorings”
• “Made with real juice” does not mean it was made with the juice on the label. For example, a pineapple fruit juice may be more apple juice than actually pineapple juice
• They can round down to 0 calories if the actual amount is below 5

The most egregious example I’ve seen lately was a jar of pickles I bought where the serving size is 1/3 of a pickle (now the website says 1/2). That’s just so that the sodium doesn’t get out of control and, in all likelihood, because an entire pickle may be more than the 5 Calories allowed to say it’s “0 Calories”.

*This is changing, slowly. Manufacturers now have to put servings for the entire container if it’s small enough

Struggling to figure out what the heck they did. Some kind of injection attack to send the email to an arbitrary account? How would you even mess that up in the first place

People enjoy thinking about things, rather than rote memorization, so a video that makes physics understandable and fun for people who aren’t masters in physics isn’t so bad.

That’s what I was thinking.

The fan in the thumbnail (and the one he tries in the video) fails because the fan’s intake is pulling the fan away from the sail (like an airplane propeller). However, I wonder if you redirected that intake to the front of the boat while directing the output to the sail, could you get more thrust? The fan’s intake and output would then be working together.

Also the leaf blower could work in theory but I think there’s too much friction for the leaf blower to overcome. If it did have enough to push you, then you’d also be pushed sideways by the blower’s output as well

Well the latter have more “meat” on them, whereas bugs are mostly just “shells” once they die. You aren’t eating the shells of crustaceans, you’re eating the innards
