    1. I’ve learned a number of tools I’d never used before, and refreshed my skills from when I used to be a sysadmin back in college. I can also do things other people don’t loudly recommend, but fit my style (Proxmox + Puppet for VMs), which is nice. If you have the right skills, it’s arbitrarily flexible.

    2. What electricity costs in my area. $0.32/KWh at the wrong time of day. Pricier hardware could have saved me money in the long run. Bigger drives could also mean fewer, and thus less power consumption.

    3. Google, selfhosting communities like this one, and tutorial-oriented YouTubers like NetworkChuck. Get ideas from people, learn enough to make it happen, then tweak it so you understand it. Repeat, and you’ll eventually know a lot.

  • He’s taking a break for a while, and won’t do something as regimented as weekly researched videos again. He’s still doing Lateral, his podcast, and a few smaller projects like the newsletter.

I’m hoping after he takes his break, he’s able to find a healthy balance where he can create several videos a year when he really wants to, and finds it creatively fulfilling. It really seems like he loves exploring the topics he tends to cover, so it seems unlikely he won’t return at some point. How long the break will be seems to be the biggest unknown.

The PRC and RoC share a lot of the same territorial disputes because they both view themselves as the one rightful Chinese government; they largely agree which land is “part of China”. It’s taking Taiwan’s side because it’s saying they should administer all of it.

  • It’s not even totally fair, the companies have lots of data on habits, economy of scale, peering, while the pirates have a questionable reputation, risk of law enforcement action, technical hurdles slowing adoption, and delayed access to media. Pirates’ only real advantages are lack of pressure towards unsustainable growth, and lower costs.

The companies fighting against each other are losing an unfair fight tilted in their favor. It’s kind of embarrassing for them.
