There’s the base vs code source code, which microsoft takes, adds a bunch of tracking, compiles it, and distributes that binary. If you compiled vs code yourself from source, you would not get the same executable.
A bit like chrome, because i’m pretty sure chrome isn’t open source, chromium is. Could be wrong on that.
Trickle up economics
A clunky UI - which is far, far too common on open source applications
So, what are you going to do about it ? Contribute ? Learn the ins and outs of gimp, and propose some UI changes ? And if you don’t have time to do that, who does / who cares enough for that ? People who code stuff like GIMP generally don’t really care for UI, or have the time. They’re volunteers, passionate people. Not designers.
That’s also a broad generlization. Firefox has bad UI/UX ? (Sometimes yeah on some niche things but I wholeheartedly believe google is at fault somehow) What about Krita ? Blender has been doing UI work last I heard of it, so that’s also that. Paint.net was also open source. Chromium has bad UI ? Android ? Vs Code ? GNOME ? KDE ? Element ? Jitsi ? Signal ? Wordpress ?
Yeah, gimp sucks. And the type of people who are “linux elitists”, that tell you you suck for not enjoying bad UI, also suck. But why not make a meaningful change to the world ? Try to hope for a world where GIMP is actually usable ?

By saying you don’t care about your privacy, you’re willingly ignoring any downsides. You’re saying that you, or a close one, will never do anything your government might disagree with, even in the future. Governments change, people can be in charge you never thought should be, and some people might not like what you do, whatever that could be. (I’m having a hard time explaining this one, words don’t come easily rn, see edward snowden “Arguing that you don’t care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide, is no different than saying you don’t care about free speech because you have nothing to say.”)
By contributing your data, you’re helping other, less “fun” countries discriminate against people. It’s really easy to guess using algorithms if someone is gay, had premarital sex, etc. And some people don’t like some others based on that, and would rather they were dead.
You can, on firefox at least. No add ons required it’s a browser feature.
Cookies fall short just the same as sessions. you’re asking the user to pinkie promise they won’t clear their cookies / modify them.
An account seems the most logical. You need to avoid duplicates ; it’s not really about privacy here. You’ll only make a tradeoff between accomplishing no duplicates and letting users do what they want.
Cookies are really inappropriate for this use…
It can make phone calls and run android apps. Is that enough ?
