  • Honestly after watching DS9 I think O’Brien is the best engineer in the entire series.

Almost every other engineer we see works on some flagship federation starship. O’Brien has had to deal with:

    • DS9, a hodgepodge of three different alien technologies and the occasional booby trap
    • The Defiant, which was half baked to such an extent he had to design and implement a complete overhaul of major systems
    • The dominion war alliance fleet, where he had to oversee repairs for the ships of three major alien races. Even if he didn’t do the repairs himself, he probably had to have significant working knowledge.

I feel like the only person you could compares is Scotty, and that’s mostly based on his feats in that one TNG episode and SNW.

  • Exactly. The problem isn’t diversity. The problem is soulless corporations who put out mediocre games, and then try to shoehorn diversity in a fairly surface level and lazy fashion as a distraction.

It would have been weird if AC1 didn’t star an individual of MENA descent, because the game was set in the middle east. Origins had minority protagonists for similar reasons Connor being Native American in AC3 added a lot of depth when it came to the concept of freedom and how it relates to the American revolution.

I feel like I’ve seen the same story a million times. Mediocre IP, lazy forced diversity, culture war commentary, undeserved stellar reviews, underperformance with audiences due to fundamental issues.

  • I feel like a lot of companies that put the most emphasis on making diverse IP make the worst products. I don’t think that the lack of quality is due to diversity. Rather, I think that companies with soulless corporate leadership have a habit of producing mediocre content and attempting to obfuscate said mediocrity by making an otherwise uninspiring game a referendum on the culture war.

I’m willing to bet that there are developers who can make a game that is more organically diverse and genuinely fun, but that they don’t get an honest shot due to the state of modern gaming.

Anyway this game is gonna be crap, IGN is gonna give it a 10/10, and Polygon is gonna go on a tirade when it underperforms in the same way every AC game since black flag has underperformed.

  • Honestly this reeks of corporate politics. I’m willing to bet at some point in development there was a regime change, and current management pushed this out the door just to clear the board.

Everything I heard about this came seems to indicate that it isn’t terrible by any means, just mediocre and overpriced in an absolutely oversaturated genre. If management was invested in it, they probably could have spent a ton on marketing, achieved middling numbers, and then used those middling numbers to justify continued development for another few months.

I’m confident in saying that because there are a handful of shitty live service games being operated at a loss for no real reason other than shutting them down would mean management would have to actually admit they fucked up.

  • That’s just one example. There are others.

A huge part of the Klingon civil war arc is that the Duras family had no male heir. They eventually just dig one out of the brothels. At no point is it considered a viable option for either of the sisters to openly lead.

When Worf wanted to get married to Jadzia, they needed Martok’s wife’s approval due to the extremely stratified gender roles. When they had trouble getting said approval, Martok basically said that it wasn’t his place to interfere and sort it out himself. A huge portion of the reason why Jadzia had trouble getting approval is because she doesn’t behave like you’d expect a Klingon women to. All of this friction is in spite of the fact that Martok is a lot more open minded than most other Klingons.

Klingon society is regressive in a million other ways. They are governed by a glorified aristocracy. Worf installed Martok as chancellor by killing Gowron in a casual death battle. They advised crusher to help Worf kill himselves when he was paralyzed. The society is still fairly religious. A popular coming of age ceremony involves repeatedly getting shocked with pain sticks.

All of that’s just off the top of my head. There’s probably more. The idea that Klingon society is ass backwards in a million different ways but super tolerant of trans individuals stretches all belief and feels more akin to Tumblr headcanon than any actual reality.

  • Did you watch DS9?

I ask because the show makes it extremely clear on multiple occasions that while Curzon and Jadzia Dax share memories and a lot of personality traits, they are ultimately distinct people. This distinction becomes even more clear when Ezri Dax is introduced.

This is explicitly mentioned in the episode you are referencing. Jadzia Dax is not bound by the Klingon blood oath Curzon took. While Kor sees her and Curzon as identical, the other two Klingons don’t and are reluctant to let her come. One also makes frequent comments that Jadzia is incapable on account of her being a woman.

As a sidenote, Klingon society is extremely regressive. Part of this is the presence of strong gender roles. I highly doubt they’d be accepting of trans individuals.

Discovery has a non-binary Trill/Symbiote pair. They are non binary because the host identifies as such. They also consider themselves a different person than previous pairs, some of whom are non binary and some of who are cisgendered.

    Thanks for that last part.

The reason I immediately jumped to the bullying is because I feel like I’ve seen this story a million times. Someone loudly proclaims some extremely popular moral opinions. In the process, they then proceeded to insult whatever morally defunct out group.

At first it seems great. After all, bigots/Nazis are horrible people that need to be put in their place.

However, over time, the definition of bigot/Nazi widens to the point where it essentially becomes meaningless, while the vitriol towards whatever group becomes more and more unhinged.

I remember on reddit there was a sub called justneckbeard things. It started by roasting toxic neck beards. However by the end they’d just be posting pictures of obese nerds, making wild and completely unfounded moral assumptions, and then using those assumptions as a justification to bully people.

I honestly don’t think most of the people complaining about bigots are here to protect tolerance. I think they’re just toxic people who enjoy being cruel.

Ffs. Let’s look at this thread.

The top comments are by far just assholes. They dismiss and demean people like high school bullies. They are overly cruel, and blatantly attempt to justify that behavior like pretending their targets are just deplorable who deserve to be treated like this.

I find it disingenuous that you focus on the comments downvoted to hell and completely handwave away this obviously shitty behavior.

Please explain to me, in detail, how the people responding to my comments aren’t being overly aggressive, outright hostile, extremely dismissive, and overall disrespectful.

The main dude responding to me immediately called me a bigot, and is in other parts of this post is “joking” about how bigots should be burned. When I pointed out that was kinda fucked, he made a “joke” that I was a sexual deviant.

This is high school bully behavior. You guys are bullies who tag people are problematic to justify shitty behavior.

Okay so you’ll notice I didn’t have any specific criticisms of discovery listed, and people in this thread are calling me a bigot, dismissing my opinion, and being general assholes to me.

There also is someone who comes in, implied that the legitimate criticisms that have nothing to do with identity politics are BS and the real reason OP doesn’t like Discovery is that they are a bigot.
