  • There’s a really interesting discussion in here link (~34:59) around native 4k raster performance and beauty versus AI generated data. Here’s a snippet:

yeah it’s super interesting it’s almost like a paradigm shift and it goes a bit into that discussion about fake frames but what are fake frames is is are all frames fake in a way because they have to be rendered

I would say that cyberpunk frames using dlss including frame generation are much realer than traditional Graphics frames. You know, if you think about all of the graphics tricks like you know like all the different kinds of occlusion, shadows, fake Reflections screen space effects…
Raster in general is just a a bag of fakeness. So like we get to throw that out and start doing path tracing and like actually get real shadows and real reflections and the only way that we do that is by synthesizing a lot of pixels with AI because you know it would just be far too computationally intensive to to do you know rendering without tricks.
So we’re we’re changing the kinds of tricks we’re using and I think at the end of the day we’re getting more real pixels with dlss than without it’s weird to say.

  • Great observation! Sadly, I’m not sure I can do much to encourage people to ask questions. I do upvote them whenever they happen, though. I’ve tried the weekly, what are you playing thread to just get folks involved and commenting, which seems to do ok. I worry that without news making the space visible on a regular basis, people won’t think to post here at all. Open to suggestions if you have any ideas on how to spur that.

When it comes to posts, I try to find the most informative and least click-baity. I suspect, just like on reddit, most people skim headlines and move on. I will try to link to the original sources, store pages, or other information in the posts when available. That sadly tends to be the larger magazines/sites.

  • This is true, but the comment was about it affecting gamers, and it is expected to affect end-users.

Unity’s new fees will be applied retroactively to all games already on the market that cross its revenue and install thresholds, and to all to all games regardless of price - raising questions around the viability of free game giveaways, game demos, bundles, and more - and there’s concern developers may now face charges for pirated game installs. There are also questions around how the changes will complicate the logistics of being on services like Game Pass.

“… Most indies simply don’t have the resources to deal with these kind of batshit logistics. Publishers are less likely to take on Unity games, because there’s now a cost and an overhead,”

  • Are you in the US?
What G5 model is it specifically you’re looking at ? This one, the KD i5 one??

Doing a quick search, the price doesn’t sound terrible for that particular one, but maybe someone with more recent gaming laptop experience can chime in.

If using Amazon, make sure it’s shipped AND sold by amazon. They’ll usually cover other things but it can be a hassle. Their return policy for computers isn’t great and only covers DOA within 30 days, and if it’s a subtle problem like overheating or something they may test it and if they don’t see the problem charge you a 15% restocking fee. After that, everything is warranty from gigabyte. So just be aware.

  • I thought this was might just grieving parents blaming something coincidental, until reading this article. I didn’t know that there are other cases of the spiciness of these new peppers seem to be causing problems for some people. Still no clear evidence, but it’s possible there’s something.

“These ultraspicy peppers may either contain a unique vasoactive substance, or there is a dose-related effect of capsaicin concentration that can trigger RCVS,” the doctors concluded. "Further research in this area is needed to determine the exact pathophysiology of this phenomenon. This case provides further evidence that ingestion of hot peppers may lead to serious consequences and that further research is needed to assess their safety."

    Emphasis mine.
