The predictable backstop of subscription plus the nearly limitless potential upside of ad sales is just too tempting in the long run for media companies. They get to have their cake and eat it too. Spotify, Amazon, Netflix and have all eventually given in, despite insisting they never would. Shareholder owned media companies will always gravitate to this model. It’s the only way to maximize quarterly revenue growth.
Some portions of the far right are allergic to being called “political”. Even outright Nazis often claim to be moderate. Part of the reason they end up having those beliefs is from a profound lack of awareness of self and others. They thus can convince themselves that they are the moderates, and everyone else is extreme
I really enjoyed it, and will return to it. But I put it down because it felt like doing chores. I will try again and try to focus on the scenery and story, which I do like a lot
Agreed, switchbot has been working for a while great in my hermit crab terrarium
It is insanely petty. Perhaps they don’t want people reverse engineering their APIs, but all their competitors and threat actors likely do it, just not on a public repo.
Sometimes a mommy ice shelf loves a daddy ice shelf
If you have a significant other, they will discover said instances after about 5 minutes using the pihole and you’ll hear about it. I think it’s a kind of law of home networking.
There are other related sand moles that aren’t as rare as this particular species! So assumedly trained on those
This is also why languages like R and Python are supplanting SPSS and Matlab. Open source is just better in some ways, particularly once it gets over the initial usability barrier, which Jellyfin seems to now be achieving.
I use self-hosting for home assistant and jellyfin (behind two duckdns domains). I started to add more (Joplin server, Immich, tiny tiny RSS etc.) and found my workload increasing a lot, So I’ve paused that effort for now. For Joplin, I use syncthing with my Pi as a hub instead, which is much simpler.
Wonder what kind of severance he's getting
Good point. It just means that only people who themselves are likely to be seeders can download from me. Which is better than nothing, but not ideal!
You need it for seeding
That is very depressing. The arms race between bad actors and repressive governments keeps whittling away at our right to privacy
Seems like some VPNs are pulling back from port forwarding. Was a bummer that Mullvad did, probably due to legal pressure
My mom barely uses desktop anymore. Everything on iPad essentially. I’m chuckling thinking of what she’d do to me if I tried to migrate her to linux.
The old logo was a better portrayal of my tangled web of smart home stuff lol
“The full story is that back in 2020, MSN fired the team of human journalists responsible for vetting content published on its platform. As a result, as we reported last year, the platform ended up syndicating large numbers of sloppy articles about topics as dubious Bigfoot and mermaids, which it deleted after we pointed them out.”
MSN is not blameless for publishing bad content without supervision. And we are due for a wave of bad AI content starting now. So this problem is going to keep getting worse.
Yeah, but that’s a key part of the problem. The media had already automated a lot of the news curation into Google News, MSN and other portals, getting people used to not paying much attention to the particular source of news. The news is now moving to generating the actual content in an automated way, rather than just the aggregation step.
I normally don’t post about my blog here, but I literally posted this today so…https://dantheclamman.blog/2024/04/24/environmentally-youve-got-to-hand-it-to-sauron/
