I switched the the snap package and it’s been rock solid and pain free the entire time.

I welcome any and all comments on why snap is Satan.

I use vimwiki and wrote a bash script that pulls all of the Todo items from across my wiki and puts them in a single file with TODO and IN PROGRESS sections.

I have a keybind that pulls up the list and runs the script to refresh it.

It’s not linked to any calendar though. I keep my to-do list and calendar separate.

I use Gmail and have that calendar for my personal stuff. At work I am forced to use outlook.

Unless it’s the newest of new Nvidia GTX cards, it’s generally a wash.

You tradeoff issues from one to the other.

I had a 3070ti that I “upgraded” to a 6900xt and I kind of regretted it. I fell for the AMD is king on Linux hype.

Nvidia is way better than people let on and AMD isn’t nearly as great as people let on.

That’s why my windows partition is still in regular use. I play apex legends. It used to play flawlessly on pop is but over a year ago at this point it started screwing up.

I’d usually be able to get it working after a while, but when I have 30-45 minutes or maybe an hour at most to game, I don’t want to spend all of it “fixing”. I’d rather restart into windows and be playing in a minute.

The rest of my servers (VMs moslty) are named for what they actually do/which vlan they are on (eg vm15) and aren’t fun or excitin names. But at least I know if I am on that VM it has access to that vlan(or that it’s segregated from my other networks).

This is such horseshit. The drama of the Linux community never ceases to amaze me.

I think the part about teams that bothers me the most is the broader o365, windows, onedrive, SharePoint etc “integration”. It’s so fucking bad.

I never know where anything is saving. Locally? On my one drive? In a temp folder that is findable and that file doesn’t even show up as a recent file? Or is it on some weird SharePoint backend that teams is using? Am I having an offline copy or did I just inadvertently save a copy to the shared drive?

It’s all just bad enough that it’s a horrendous overall user experience.

It feels like MS gets in the way more than it let’s me do my job. I didn’t always feel this way.

To top it off, the way people use it causes issues. Everyone does it differently. You could have people that use outlook for sending docs, people that use teams exclusively, people that use both, people that send share links in email, people that just tag you in some buried “team” you didn’t ever want to be a part of.

Bleh. The amount of productivity lost to MS software offsets almost any productivity gain we get from it. It’s a “wash” at best these days.

They probably had an advanced distributed snapshot backup system. Where any and all employees that used the file in the last 10 years had a version of it saved from a point in time–potentially even on their personal machines or as email attachments to their personal emails.

I got audited a few years back. I claimed something that set off a red flag–deducted tuition for a grad program as a business expense.

I freaked out at first because I thought I must have messed something up or that they knew I messed something up.

What I discovered is that: at the end of the day these folks are probably just as annoyed as you that they got another “audit” in their pile. And being flagged doesn’t mean you are wrong. It means they need more information before they can decide.

I wrote a detailed response with the actual flow chart from their own guidance, I circled the decisions on the chart, and then provided proof of each decision in my letter. Basically I held their hand and showed them I could legit deduct it.

They were like “oh, cool thanks! You’re good. Actually, you could have itemized x if you have receipts for it and you’d get a bigg r deduction if you wanted to amend”

That’s when I realized they don’t really check everyone’s taxes at all. They have a system that flags certain situations for further review. I guess, in my case, people lie or mess up this tuition deduction a lot so they double check.

I think he was trying to say apps get access to “root features” through an abstraction layer/API calls that is controlled.

They don’t/wouldn’t have carte blanche root access to the underlying system. It’s kinda like a docker container or VM or flatpaks/snap packages on Linux. They are sandboxed from everything else and have to be given explicit premission to do certain things(anything that would need root privileges/hardware access).

We all have our talents. Some stuff is “table stakes” baseline stuff, but with the way MS has bungled their software these days I’ll never judge anyone for not knowing how to do something “simple” because MS has made most tasks infuriatingly difficult.

Ms365, onedrive, and teams integration makes me feel like the PDF saver.

I’m fucking smart and I crush my job, but the way they’ve “integrated” all of their dumb services has me asking my team to “just send me a $&@$ing email with the pdf”.

My job isn’t MS office guru. My job involves using PPTs, docs, XLS, etc to get funding, effect strategy, guide investment, brief senior leadeahip, and all that. But holy shit I feel like I turn into a clown/Luddite with dumb MS office tools.

I think unRAID does that. But I never looked into it much tbh.

I don’t have nearly that much worth backing up(5TB–and realistically only 2TB is probably critical), but I have a Synology Nas(12TB raid 1) and truenas (zfs striped/mirrored) that I back my stuff to (and they back up to each other).

Then I have a raspberry pi with a USB drive (8tb) at my parents house 4 hours away, that my Synology backs up to (over tailscale).

Oh, and I have a USB HDD(8tb) that I plug in and backup my Synology Nas to and throw in my fireproof safe. But thats a manual backup I do once every quarter or 6 months if I remember. That’s a very very last resort backup.

My offsite is at my parents.

And no, I have not tested it because I don’t know how I’m actually supposed to do that.

So it sounds like Vultr isn’t doing anything nefarious at all.

Someone apparently actually read the terms and services for the first time a few days ago and misunderstood them since they were saying it was in reference to the Vuktr website not your servers.

And either way, they removed the offended lang to clear it up.

There is no evidence that they’ve done anything with anyone’s data.

Is it unmaintained completely or just feature complete and not getting recent updates?

I’ve seen people say “this tool isn’t being maintained because there aren’t recent check ins” and those two things are very different.

I actually wonder if we could ever agree on a definition?

Maybe:

Bloat: any unnecessary, superfluous software, software package, or feature that is unused or unnecessarily inefficient, and/or uses system resources to an unessasary or unreasonable degree.

What do you guys think? Because then we can still argue about bloat and what reasonable is! And that’s what it’s all about. Arguing for the sake of it!
