Then your real problem is you don’t have an effective way to set and measure goals.

I quit my corporate job after burnout and went through six months of depression. Then I started my own business, contracted back at my old company doing my old job for 4x the pay and it was amazing. No more performance reviews, “quality” meetings, etc. If they wanted to force me to sit in a meeting, I was getting paid by the hour. They couldn’t dictate my hours, so when I needed a break, I took one.
Being in control was what saved me. Never work for others if you can be an independent contractor or entrepreneur.
I tell people I have some mental quirks. If they seem interested, I’ll tell them more
So … don’t you need paper to dry off? How do you keep from spraying water everywhere and getting your clothes wet? Forgive my cluelessness, but I’ve often wondered how it works.
Yep, and if you folded it, the little pointy edges would lacerate your tender bits.
Personal anecdote: now that I know I’m autistic, I look back at most of my corporate interactions and see how my literal-mindedness, bluntness, lack of ability to play political games, and overactive sense of justice combined to make me a pain in the ass to management. I had a coworker tell me, after I’d once again banged my head against a brick wall trying to explain to my manager why his decision was going to lead to disaster, that I was the most optimistic person she’d ever met. I was very confused, having just finished an angry rant about the situation, and said, “Why in the world would you say that?” She replied, “Because you seem to think things can actually improve. We all know they won’t, which is why we don’t bother to say anything.”
Talk about a lightbulb moment. I quit soon after and came back as a contractor for 4x the money, so win-win.
That is an excellent, succinct explanation

I believe humans are inherently racist, or actually discriminatory against those not considered part of our “tribe,” whatever that may be. We have a built-in “us versus them” mentality that exists despite conscious efforts to educate and be mindful of those attitudes in ourselves. The sooner we admit to subconscious bias, the sooner we can mitigate it by remaining vigilant against that kind of thinking.
My response would be, “You could be right.” Then I’d go about my life. I just let criticism roll off me like water off a duck’s back unless I think it’s valid. It’s hilarious to watch how frustrated they get when you’re unapologetically yourself.
Dungeons and Dragons is popular among autistic people
Was majoring in accounting and had to take a CS101 class programming in Pascal. Changed majors immediately, thinking “Where has this been all my life?” This predates PCs, although I did have a Commodore 64 to practice coding on BASIC after that.
This! Seek first to understand.
COBOL because I am a fossil
I agree, but maybe for older students. Have you ever tried to engage a group of young children in a discussion?
It’s how mine worked. My best friend and I learned the sign language alphabet so we could talk to each other in class by holding our hands below our desks.
Exactly. My son’s school even had “silent lunch” some days. They treated his ADHD by denying recess most of the time. In high school, he was barred from standing next to his best friend in the stands during football games (they both played trumpet in marching band) because they were talking. There is very little opportunity for children to socialize in school, and most of it is reminiscent of Lord of the Flies.
Great analogy. (BTW it’s “free rein”)
