  • It really does feel like a lot sometimes with the updates. I’m also thinking about looking for something that is also quite close to the edge / rolling but maybe a bit slower.

I was on Manjaro before for a couple of years. They clone the arch repos but then hold back the updates usually a week or so for testing. And it feels in general a bit more “stable” in that concern. But unfortunately over the years i noticed some problems with it like holding back important security updates for way too long for my taste or rewrites of some arch-tools which then not worked in a expected way.

And Endeavour felt right from the first second on noticeable more mature and professional with settings and tools that made sense.

The one big distro family i never looked into is Fedora. As far i see they have some kind of semi-rolling release which could fit the bill quite nicely. Major releases which then kept fairly up-to-date but not so fast and overwhelming as with Arch.

Maybe i will check it out. But yeah, i would probably miss the AUR. It is just so damn convenient.

  • One can like multiple distros. e.g. i run Debian on my media center because i have no need for bleeding edge software and want just a stable system that changes as rarely as possible and only receives security patches. Its a perfect OS for shit that just needs to be setup once and then runs in that configuration forever.

If you try that with e.g. Arch, it is very possible that after a week you have suddenly a different theme installed for your frontend and your plugins stopped working.

For my webservers i tend more to ubuntu because of newer packages as Debian but being still relative stable in terms of versions. (but looking into others. i’m just an lazy fuck right now)

And on my desktop system i run EndeavourOS (Arch) because i like to have the newest shit for gaming and i like some of the design decisions the dev made like the early merge of /bin.

And on some of my ancient android phones i got Alpine to run very nicely in a chroot. Primarily because it is very very lightweight / compact and uses OpenRC as init system because Systemd gets very pissy when its not running as PID 1 / detecting it is in a chroot and then refuses to start services (there are hackarounds, but why bother?)

And then there is of course things like Raspian, etc.

Use the right tool for the job.

Depends on what you mean with not working. Get any errors? e.g. i like to test with vkcube (vulkan-tools need to be installed. don’t know the package name on Nobara / Fedora). if gamescope vkcube runs, then its likely not a gamescope problem but one with the e.g. game you try to run or wine / proton.

But the latest versions seem to be indeed a bit problematic. The last that works (mostly) flawless on my Arch is 3.14.2. So maybe worth a shot to downgrade to that if your current one fails with vkcube.

Otherwise, it is probably a good idea to get in contact with the Nobara community or the developer. I hate to recommend Discord, but as far i know that is unfortunately the only place where they are active.

And there is of course always the excellent Arch Wiki which is usuable for other distros as well: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gamescope

Why do you compare it to the rest of the internet and not to the rest of the tech sector or more specifically closed source development?

following your logic i could just pick a random group of people and say e.g. “look, there are more trans people in FOSS than in Deep-sea fishing crews”. Makes no sense. You have to compare it to something that is actually comparable.

I am aware. But that makes 2 out of how many?

Look, i’m not trying to attack a group here. I’m just having the habit of calling out bullshit when i see it. That there is a larger proportion of trans people in FOSS is a myth. It’s based on memes that have gotten out of control.

In FOSS specifically, the opposite has been true for a long time and there has been a severe lack of diversity. That has thankfully improved a lot and the environment has now become much more colorful and has adapted to the reality of the general population. But that’s all there is to it. There is no significant overrepresentation, at least I haven’t found anything that would prove that.

Yes, multiple. I’m also in multiple FOSS user and developer groups.

But there is no need to believe me. You can ask Github. https://opensourcesurvey.org/2017/

Along other dimensions, representation is stronger: 1% of respondents identify as transgender (including 9% of women in open source), and 7% identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, or another minority sexual orientation.

The proportion of the general population is 0.5 to 0.7%. So yes, it is very slightly higher, but not in the way that all the memes have been trying to portray it lately.

A good chunk of them are autistic, or ADHD dominated interest groups, like FOSS, or various hobbies. It also includes the LGBT+ crowd.

I call bullshit on that. There may be a slightly more than average representation (maybe not even that) but i have not seen even a single robust proof that indicates it is a “good chunk”.

This whole FOSS and LGBT+ or autistic or whatever is a meme, nothing more.

The driver shows up as “cups + gutenprint” and as far i can tell there is no other. so i guess that is already the one and only available driver.

and i have to correct myself, it is a Canon, not a Brother. Canon MX300 from 2007.

I mean it is not that big of a deal anyway. there is a single Windows machine left in this household that i can use for print jobs. and yeah, maybe i could use it as print server, that is actually a interesting idea lol.

Printer are worse. try to get a decade old brother to print more than a half page without completely freezing and needing a hard restart. driver is unmaintained unfortunately.

on Windows the printer works perfect though. which makes me quite unhappy :|

wifi on the other hand is not a problem i can remember. even on a 15 year old laptop, the AUR has a driver that it extracts from a ancient .deb and then patches it to make it work with modern kernels. lovely.
