  • There are some great suggestions here! It feels like a lot to focus on each of these things when you’re not practiced with these habits being suggested, but gaining proficiency in any of them will help to improve the others.

This link (PDF) is one of the Toastmasters resources on body language. Some of the tools presented there will help you to more effectively nope out of situations when you become uncomfortable, and hopefully empower you to feel more confident making those calls before it becomes too costly. I think it will also assist you in catching these occurrences earlier, since incongruities between what’s being spoken and what the other person’s body is saying can signify that there is a disconnect in intentions

  • MH4U on the 3ds was my first introduction and I actually kinda miss being able to quickly tap the items that were up on the touch screen to use them. World on PS and Rise on the switch scratch the itch but I was visibly upset that tracking didn’t make it into Rise; it was just a great mechanic and it felt extra satisfying to build out the monster knowledge, and it added some wonderful depth to the gameplay.

I’m not really all that crazy about the fort defense mechanic in Rise, I’d genuinely skip it if I could.

As much as I enjoy the series and still play it, there’s a certain amount of ennui that I’m experiencing when it comes to hunting Jaggis and the rest of the same monsters every time. New mechanics help to make up for it by having the hunt be slightly different, but wow what I wouldn’t give for a totally new experience playing Monster Hunter.

  • Last year a hurricane came up the coast all the way to Maine rather than being pushed out to sea, and a number of the coastal towns around us saw millions of dollars worth of damage despite how much the storm had weakened over cooler waters. A few days later I was able to get over to my grandmother’s old house to check the damage for my aunt and could barely believe the devastation - piles of sand, seaweed, jersey barriers crammed against each other all akimbo, and mountains of flood damaged property waiting to be hauled away. All just from the storm surge.

Why a few days later, you ask?

  • Iirc the leaked internal docs and reporting showed that nvidia was downloading 81 years worth of video per day. If the pattern holds, and we “throw” the books at them, it probably looks a lot like one of those building-sized front end loaders dropping the library of Alexandria on those executives.

As an alternative, I would be fine if nvidia were no longer allowed to hold copyright or trademarks since the company believes that those don’t matter, required to share all internal documents (including any and all planning), and required to open source all their code until the company implodes

  • As a monogamous cishetflex guy, I would offer a hug or other platonic physical comforting gesture to you and say “I dunno, people are weird. Don’t let us get you down”.

To your point about gender being uncountably infinite, I agree with you - particularly because my gender is only defined by my singular relationship to how I perceive myself (and I think everybody comes to that in their own way). There’s a certain subset of “everyone” that just can’t grok that someone else could have a different understanding of themselves, and a nonzero percentage of them feels like those differences of opinions devalue their existence for one reason or another. It’s totally unwarranted and not the case, but it sucks when they act on those feelings to denigrate another person.

I’m sad that you’re getting down about it, but I also want to encourage you - you grappling with this is going to strengthen who you are and I’m really excited for that person.

  • I know grifters and charlatans infest every industry, but it feels especially bad when they’re taking advantage of folks who are trying to do positive things. It’s a shame these state attorneys general aren’t chomping at the bit to combat these scams.

For our New England peeps: we’ve had a really good experience with ReVision Energy. They’ve linked us to the state webpages with explanations of tax incentives and other programs that impact our plans, are a worker-owned co-op, and have been pleasant to work with. When we had some panels that weren’t producing what they should, they warrantied them but ended up allowing us to keep two panels for our own separate solar plans and the techs even sent us links to resources for those projects.

  • From this layman’s perspective, this seems like the executives at Nvidia directed people to access computer systems in a way they were not authorized to and with methods designed to circumvent the security of the sites in question. It seems, on its face, to be a violation of the CFAA that was knowingly pushed by these executives - and I hope you’ll all join me in calling your congressional representatives to advocate for a full prosecution of them
