  • We think the way the 3 quarks entangle to make a neutron could be asymmetric, such that it’s not a perfect, canceled out neutral blob.

Up quarks have +2/3 of a charge, down quarks have - 1/3.

Depending on how they all exist in the nucleus (quarks can’t be free, they basically have to be bound to each other, it’s why the strong force is so strong), they could overlap perfectly, or they could be next to each other like in a triangle, and we could notice that a neutron actually has a polarity where one side is slightly (impossibly slightly) more positive/negative than the other.

Then we have polarized neutrons, and your whole life is a lie.

But we’ve looked, and basically there’s no sign as far as we can tell, which is unfortunate, it means quarks are truly lost in the ‘quark-gluon soup’ of a hadron.

  • So, as someone whose last job was in ai:

Sigh, yeah, this is basically how it works…

Throw unimaginable amounts of data at a GPU, you convert words to numbers through an algorithm called word2vec, then correlate between the words in context, English on one side, unknown language on the other, just looking for any connection at all. If the vector products are above a threshold (we call that activation) then there might be a relationship.

Once you have it you experiment with it, try to make more associative connections building on that. The gpus just churn endlessly till they go ‘bing’.

We did a simpler version as humans with the Rosetta stone, it had Greek, which we knew, and 2 forms of Egyptian, which we didn’t.

Yeah the show is ludicrous in having someone point to a broom, say ‘mekh’ and the next sentence is ‘I’m afraid the current structure of relations in the alpha quadrant requires us to demand you no longer perform warp travel through our sector as we do not tolerate antimatter reactions under our religion’ translated from ‘guh-tah!’

  • She started young, has dance training, and is 46, so she’s experienced but still can play young (can’t really put an age on her, never could).

For actresses that’s key, you need experience before you can act reliably, but by then you often look too old for the parts they need.

I think she’s a mid actress, but her dancing background gives her much more physicality to her roles, which matters when covered in goop, and makes up for what I consider her weak and wooden facial acting (though she was warm in the terminal).

Also she’s an uno draw 4 when it comes to race, so that’s another thing director’s don’t have to worry about.
