What you’re looking for is difficult to find in the framing of Science Fiction because its very framing invokes technological advancement - technology is the application of science, and machinery is the result of technological innovation.

Machinery’s certainly a result of technological innovation, but not the only result. Different materials, even altogether different forms of organisms are also results of technological innovation. OP’s left it rather open, so it may be that they also mean these different applications of science.

But isopropyl alcohol and enough elbow grease will get it off, if it’s just a coating on plastic.

Do beware, however, that you may want to dilute the alcohol to some degree, or simply use a lower concentration form of it. Too strong and it may eat at the underlying plastic just as much as the coating and ruin it.

If the Otterbox case had a rubberized coating on it to try to improve grip, and with it being 6 years old, there’s a possibility it’s the culprit. You could try ditching the case for a little while, and/or getting a new case and swapping them out, clean the surfaces again and see if you feel the stickiness again after handling your phone and other stuff.

However, often with those rubberized coatings, the degradation (when severe enough to feel sticky) is more immediately apparent and you’d be more apt to avoid touching anything else afterward. Also in my experience I don’t recall it transferring to other surfaces much, but then again when I dealt with it I noticed ASAP and cleaned my hands right away.

But compare with GOG then. They sell games, you download them with no DRM so you own the download essentially.

This is the model digital media should take, frankly. Anything less may as well be misleading marketing, as far as I’m concerned.

I think I better see what you meant now. Potential degradations in processing ability possibly from a combination of cognitive overload and exhaustion from the volumes of information encountered, both of which may be more frequently reached from a mixture of a lack of self-regulation, not knowing & exceeding one’s limits, and inadequate education and practice regarding the former two alongside reasoning abilities to more effectively navigate info without as often being overloaded/exhausted.

This is just a hypothesis, but I believe that one of the roots of the problem is a lower ability to retrieve information, caused by increased exposure to advertisement.

I’m not sure I follow where you’re coming from here. Is the idea that over-exposure to advertisement is processed the same as being provided general information, reducing people’s inclination to seek out information independently, despite the fact that advertising is only the provision of specific, narrow information?

Yeah, some interfaces have somehow contorted themselves to being utterly inaccessible in efforts to be maximally accessible.

Whether that’s removing any immediately visible buttons whatsoever, only displaying vague icons (with no text labels) only to be seen in that software, or weirdly expecting a certain degree of old/new tech familiarity that may be too old for younger people or too new to make sense for many to be that familiar with yet.

Thought this was interesting coverage of a mix of different issues from inattentiveness, prompt resignation at slight effort, and tech and media illiteracy. It’s difficult to determine what all the contributors to these behaviors are across different age demographics, as you see it both with the young and the old in different forms.

There’s a sort of expectation from some of both to operate software more like simple machinery (appliances, more than applications) where you tap or click the buttons and it promptly and predictably responds (ideally), and when it doesn’t…To simply give up and try to find a different app that works as desired, or a person to help them.

I must’ve been more tired than I realized and didn’t catch that properly, sorry about that! I was also more focused on the other person’s question and taking it more literally as in the pseudo-guest feature of Discord, which enables you to pop in and ask without a full account.

Forums seem to end up being hostile to newcomers, with all this “did you search the forum first you fucking noob?” mentality. Having a living place for real-time questions and discussion just feels better, same way email exchanges feel terrible after using Slack for so long. You can still have incredibly toxic people in real-time chat servers, obviously, but there just seems to be less overall stress to keep the posts in the forum “pristine” or… whatever that was.

Tbh you can find similar hostility to newcomers in Discord servers, simply swap some words about for a, “Did you read the pins you fucking noob?” mentality. It’s very much the old forum kneejerk response of, “Did you read the rules/stickied posts?” simply in a different context. As you note though, you’ll find assholes in any communication medium.

Also, to your point about a place for real-time questions & discussion, that’s also to its detriment for anyone out of sync with a server’s more active hours, which I think is kind of an understated argument against it among the usual criticism found in these threads. Sure search is one thing, but the asynchronous nature of a forum is imo one of its greatest strengths, especially considering how flaky and/or inundated Discord’s inbox/mentions can be.
