I’ve often thought it would be funny to add more and more modern features to FreeDOS. Funny but like, also a lot of work for a “joke.”

Sounds like the octopus wrangler knows how to leverage the behaviors of the various animals around it towards it’s own ends. Pretty interesting! I’m also curious about their potential follow ups to see if they have memory for and can recognize previous group members.

Wow, hadn’t thought about that one in a long time. I thought it was an old Scott Hanselman blog and I was correct! I’ll have to reread it, been years now.

I’m not sure there’s much why to it exactly. I feel like a small fraction of people I’ve met in life were truly passionate and excited about the work they did. Most had some passion for an art, or a hobby, or for their kids very commonly, but people who really want to grow and master their craft are somewhat rare generally. Most folks just want to do well enough to keep their jobs and then go home to whatever they actually care about.

Consider that to go on a site specifically for programming questions and then take a survey about it, you have to be the kind of person that cares about getting their code “right”. The majority of programmers I’ve met would only go there to copy-paste a quick answer, and those people have all moved to asking chat-gpt for code now.

This is especially funny because I think there’s only 7 positions on a typical trombone anyway, and unless you have godlike lips can only hit 3 or 4 octaves across those. i played trombone through high school and it’s like the easiest instrument, haha.

In the US system, you can receive various certifications, called “degrees” indicating how much education you have received. Most US teenagers attend “high school” until about 18 years old, which completes primary education. Then, some go on to secondary education, called university or college in the US.

Most universities offer several degree programs. Typically, a 2 year “Associates degree” for trade work, 4 year “Bachelors degree” programs for white collar work. And then longer “Masters” degrees for advanced topics and even longer “Doctorate/Doctoral” programs for getting into academic research.

An MBA is a Masters of Business Administration. Typically, a 2 year program on top of a 4 year Bachelors degree in some business field like accounting, finance, management of information systems (MIS), etc. The stated purpose of an MBA program is to educate a person in the many facets of successfully running and operating a business.

However, in the US, our education system is deeply stratified by loans, and also just broken. Each higher tier of education is almost exponentially more expensive than the previous, so only fairly well off people can afford the time and money to get an MBA. And/or they go deeply into debt on loans to finance the degree. In addition, universities (which are all now run as for-profit businesses) are seen less as institutions of learning and more like indoctrination centers for training up workers while also infusing them with American business values.

This is most prevalent in Economics, which is treated like a hard science of business but is nothing of the sort. It used to be Keynesian economics, which at least has grounding in statistics, but now actually teaches a very specific interpretation of economics called Modern Monetary Theory. In this way, almost all American middle managers are indoctrinated into this, who are by that point either in deep debt and thus beholden to the MMT system, or are already wealthy and thus defenders of that system.

This has created an economic crisis in the US where MBAs are taking over companies and then applying these theories to cut labor costs, over-leverage debt, sell off assets; all to boost short term profit. All of this is at the expense of the business’ long-term viability but MMT is all an elaborate con to ensure wealth (profit) is funneled to owners while systematically pushing the costs onto the public.

Guianan uses the incredible power of matter replication and atomic assembly to make chocolate cakes and fake alcohol for people. The holodeck does the same, plus generates 3d holograms with perfectly realistic fidelity, so that people can play racquetball in a pretend arena, or have a pirate adventure. I don’t think that “abusing the ship’s resources for fun” is a big problem in that era.

Not sure why you got downvoted, this is an excellent point. I’ve been an atheist for decades now but I still love to read tarot and yijing for myself and others. They’re excellent tools for self-study, brainstorming, and storytelling. I like how Jodorowsky puts it: that magic speaks with the voice of the subconscious. Manipulation of the symbolic language of dreams, as with tarot cards, can prompt the conscious mind into exploring new avenues of thought, making unexpected connections which can lead to insight.

It feels like magic in the same way (for the same reasons) that cold reading allows mentalist to trick people. In the same way that meditation and hypnosis are connected. These are tools that can be used to trick people, but you can also “trick” yourself in a controlled way to accomplish things you want.

Unrelated to the astrology discussion, I love episodes with subtle jokes like this one. That tiny smile for 2 panels. I wonder if the artist redraws each nearly identical panel in order to feel the same numbing repetition that Miles is meant to express?

Pretty interesting to consider. Astrology involves a lot more than most people know. Birth charts are a huge deal for astrologers, and where they make a lot of their money. It takes some work to compile a proper chart and people pay for them.

A birth chart starts using the precise moment and place of your birth. Then the astrologer does a lot of calculations (well, now they just use computers like everyone else, but there are books to lookup and hand calculate this stuff) to determine what celestial bodies were where at your birth.

This is where your sun sign, moon sign, and all the other detailed stuff comes from. And all of that should still be valid (well as valid as it ever was) in a space faring society. Obviously you’d need to use the local view of the sky for determining which planets and constellations to use, and the local superstitions to determine what those things are supposed to mean, but I don’t think its so ridiculous to believe that a Star Trek style humanoid alien race which has religion, language, and culture wouldn’t also have superstitions and probably, specifically, astrology.

Like how alchemy leads to chemistry, astrology is the prelude to astronomy, and both start with detailed observations of the sky. Sky watching is the basis for time keeping, and most of our advanced math started as a means of tracking time (in order to keep track of holy days, and more importantly, planting days). So i think some form of astrology could well be inevitable on the path to astronomy, physics, sociology, and other real sciences.

As to the problem of daily horoscopes. Those are based on your birth chart but modified by the current sky. That’s how you get “daily outlook for all Virgos.” In theory, you could just calculate that for the home planet and call it good.

But, we’re in the future! On a spaceship! With computers! Why not do complex, subspatial calculus to compute the exact amount of starlight from Proceon 9 bouncing off Mars and reaching the starship you’re on? If we assume Trek has solved the three body problem, so that they could calculate how much Venus’ gravity affects you anywhere in the universe, why not apply the same “logic” to whatever elusive energies are believed to power astrology?

Your daily space horroscope could include superstitions from numerous cultures in a powerful, exceedingly complex, syncretic universal astronomy.

People don’t know what words mean in English either yet continue trying to force their made up definitions on others.

Language is objective, because a language is an immaterial object. The opposite, subjective, would impy that language itself has an experience of the world as an entity in itself; that it is a subject.

People’s understanding of the languages they speak is subjective (the subject is the person), but their use of language is objective, because they create objects (words, sentences) in the air or on a screen. When another person, a subject, reads those objective words, they then have a new subjective understanding of them. But the words, and the language, remain objects.
