Yeah, I only realized that once you posted it.
Rearrange, not rescale, which would be neccessary for a non-multiple-of-8 tile size. I originally thought it was ¾ size (12×12), which would need to shift graphics data to cram 2 virtual tiles into 3 physical ones. Of course, scaling would also look terrible, everything needs to be hand-drawn.
SMB on the NES and the DX port share graphics with a 16x16 tile size. Therefore, only 10x9 tiles can be shown at once, as opposed to 16x14. The small FOV and resulting camera tilt was very frustrating, especially with the Lost Levels.
This port scales the graphics down to the GB’s resolution. I imagine it takes a lot of CPU cycles just to rearrange the graphics data into the Game Boy’s 8x8 tile structure in display RAM. Either that, or it’s precomputed and the ROM is huge.
Edit: the tiles are not 12×12 but 8x8 so there is no need, they correspond to the RAM.
Also, they have backported some content from later games
The article is likely satire but I hope the reporter’s name is real.
My PC doesn’t meet the system requirements but I’ll comment for engagement
Typische Slowaken kommentieren:
Feuerwehr.
Project translators:
The preview pic says “No-strings funding […]”, which would exclude translator work if taken literally excluding the content of string
data structures
The calculator can handle it because there is no 3D, the fruits are animated 1-bit bitmaps of around 24×16 resolution. (Unlike in the Mario game, sprites don’t even have transparency, they just draw on top of each other.) Fruits can be sliced through in any of the 8 directions but the graphics always just stop animating and split horizontally in half. I’m not complaining, it’s a genius demake. The concept, gameplay, fonts, contrast fadeout with the bomb… all perfect. The watermelon in the menu is a little tutorial, and they even spare a few bytes for “⠟⠇⠯⠇⠯⠂⠿⠅ ⠀ ⠹⠁⠯⠇ ⠀ ⠛⠇⠧⠇⠽⠅⠹⠁ ⠀ ⠻⠇⠞⠆⠟⠇⠿⠅”, a friendly message because CPU-native TI-83/84 Plus games don’t have a standard for that (I’ve seen them use MODE, ALPHA, CLEAR, 2nd+MODE (QUIT), F6, a menu item, or ones that only get exited automatically on game over!)
With some practice, you can get over 95% of fruits while playing stealthily (pressing 1 key at a time with a finger on each of the 3 center columns such as SIN-COS-TAN).
The unofficial TI-83 Plus version is free… although you need the expensive calculator

Good that the journalist does not confuse kW and kWh but “homes” is a very understandable unit they somehow got wrong.
Where did you get that from? Some things just stay expensive and difficult.
Probably poorly regulated social media. If Mr Beast can publish uncritical lottery-related videos on YouTube, I can’t fathom what kids on TikTok are being fed.
