Why YSK: because, one, Facebook/Meta is a huge player in the tech industry and it’s totally unacceptable that they are continuing to be allowed to operate like this, I’m trying to raise awareness because most people have some idea that Facebook is bad, but few know the details on how and why and to what extent they’re so bad. Also, Facebook is releasing a Fediverse compatible platform, so their presence will very much affect the Fediverse, including Lemmy.
And this is only up to 2021.
Edit: After some more looking I found this which goes up to 2023, but doesn’t seem to be as detailed and only focuses on breaches as opposed to deliberate abuses. https://firewalltimes.com/facebook-data-breach-timeline/
Just the requirement of requiring Instagram to sign up for threads and use of their app with so many permissions should be enough of a red flag for those unaware of meta’s history.
The old Facebook app was the first one to convince my phone listens in on my conversations. I haven’t touched anything Facebook since 2013.
From what I’ve seen, threads is Instagram. Of course they require it.
And some people want to federate with them. oof
I think it’s the impulse to have the Frediverse grow, but it’s a bit of a Trojan horse innit?
Growth being always a good thing is the ideology of the cancer cell. Also capitalism.
We don’t need infinite userbase growth. The quality of our communities is much more important imo.
I agree, but I’m just spitballing why others could potentially see Meta joining the verse as a positive.
Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard, just ask. I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
People just submitted it. I don’t know why. They “trust me”. Dumb fucks.

Not trying to tell any other instance who they should or shouldn’t federate with, but just saying that they’re way worse than your votes being visible in the API.
Hello there! I hope you’re liking it in here. Could you please include some body text as to why should people know this? It’s our second rule, and it helps keep this space to a standard. :)
My bad! Fixed.
Thank you! Cheers
Is there a more recent list?

Because it wasn’t actually caused by WhatsApp. It was Android malware that targeted a bunch of apps on your phone including WhatsApp and basically injected ads into them. It was called the “Agent Smith” malware for a while if you remember that.
I’m all for being aware of the historical safety concerns of big tech, but this article suspiciously leaves out information.
