    On my laptop, the external displays are hooked up directly to a dedicated video card while the internal one goes through the power efficient integrated GPU first. Plugging in an external screen activates the power hungry Nvidia beast, draining twice the power compared to normal operation.

    If your laptop is designed better than mine, your external display will run off the integrated GPU. In that case, the extra power required will depend on the amount of pixels, but it should be a few percent more if you’re mostly letting the external display sit idle (i.e. put documents or a website on it). If you’re using the extra screen real estate to do more stuff, that extra stuff will also gobble up more power.
