It’s great. Been using it for years. Even wrote my own bridge that integrates beautifully with their first party ones.
What did you write a bridge for? Like what service did you connect to?
Nextcloud Talk
Neat!
Did you release the code publicly?
No. It’s a weekend job that implements only the tiny subset of features I care about.
Fair enough

New desktop isn’t electron, and of course it’ll need your email, it’s a chat app.
But the real cool thing is that it’s a matrix client (that federates!) and all the bridges are open source, the company maintains most all of the bridges to corporate chat platforms.
I’ve been using it for over 6 months. There’s a web app too if you don’t use the self hosted button. Absolutely saves me from doom scrolling.

Beeper sucks. Here’s why:
-
You increase your attack surface and downgrade your security to the level of Matrix, which is not that great and collects pretty much all of the metadata.
-
These companies do not want you using their services this way. For that reason they are always trying to break the bridges and in my case constantly logging you out of your account and threatening to delete it due to “suspicious activity”.
-
They lie about supporting SMS and RCS, instead opting to Bridge to Google Messenger, another proprietary 3rd party service.
